A Personal Security Alarm for Outdoor Use
A personal security alarm is the perfect small defensive tool for
cyclists, hikers and people who enjoy spending time exercising or doing sports outdoors. They are also ideal for
children who spend time outdoors, in the garden or in the park, without adult supervision, and for elderly people
who enjoy walking.
Personal security alarms are available in a wide range of types, shapes and sizes, many of which combine with
other self-defense devices including pepper spray and flashlights that you can use to temporary blind an attacker at night. But
in spite of all their differences, what they have in common is portability, which is why a personal security
alarm is such a good idea for outdoor use.
If you are cycling, walking or hiking and somebody confronts you,
or worse still attacks you, all you do is pull the pin out of the device and it will make a harsh, shrill,
loud noise. At very least this will surprise your assailant and give you time to either defend yourself or
make a getaway. It will also attract attention to your plight. Research has shown that in many cases the
high-pitched noise is enough to frighten would-be attackers away.
A personal security alarm is also lightweight, and many are small enough to fit in the palm
of your hand. Many of them are attached to a key ring so that they have a very useful dual function. Some look like
a cellphone, while those suitable for children usually look more like a small toy.
In this day and age, there are many people who carry firearms for protection. But, there are probably even more
who don’t. While a personal security alarm won’t harm a would-be attacker or thief, it provides otherwise
unprotected people with some kind of protection. More info on personal safety training
Apart from personal security alarms that are intended to scare people, there are others that are designed to
frighten animals, particularly bears and dogs. Some of these use ultrasonic technology to produce a high-frequency
sound that only animals can hear. Others are spray devices using mace or pepper gun that have an effective range of up to 35 feet. Just be aware that these sprays –
particularly those designed to deter bears – must be approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which
tests its potential in terms of distance and effect. For a more radical defense you can also buy stun gun devices
One thing to remember is that whatever personal security alarm system you decide on for use outdoors, it is
essential to keep it with you. This might sound obvious, but many people admit that they normally keep devices in
their purse or back pocket. In the event of a surprise attack, you need to be able to respond immediately. This
means that if you don’t literally have it in the palm of your hand, you have a much better chance of being robbed
or overcome. If you don’t want to hold your personal panic alarm, then consider wearing it around your neck while
you are exercising or doing your chosen sport. More on self defense weapons
